~~~Take it to the Dark Side!~~~
Happy 4th of July!!
Happy Fourth of July!!
These days it can be hard to find fireworks to take you family to hear in Georgia, it seems like when we were kids every small town had a parade or festival type event followed by fireworks just after dark. The changing times and economy have limited, if not stopped all the Independence Day fun in most areas. It seems like we are all limited to grilling out in the back yard with family and friends and shooting off our own store bought fireworks. I guess it’s not fair to say “limited,” we all enjoy time spent with loved ones, but if you’re itching for a bigger bang this year; We’ve gotten a list of places all across Georgia that will be hosting fireworks and other festivities for free or at a low cost.
The Great Debate: Which Refrigerator is right for you?
There are literally hundreds of refrigerators options to choose from. Whether you’re picking based on size, color, functionality, features, or simply shopping a brand name; you could spend weeks comparing them all. The most common color option these days is stainless steel, although black and the traditional white are still economical options. I’m going to give you a little bit of information about the two most common types people ask for; one being the Side by Side and the other being the French Door. Hopefully after reading my article you will take away an idea of what would work best for you and maybe even a little terminology to ease the shopping process. Side-by-side-refrigerator The Side by Side is most commonly abbreviated, SXS, allowing appliance dealers to move more efficiently through the quoting and invoicing process. Most of the time your estimates will come labeled this way. The SXS refrigerator is all about convenience, it allows for easier organization in both the refrigerator and freezer portions as it has top to bottom shelving on both sides. You can easily store the most used items at a comfortable height. Both sides are opened by a door, so there is no drawer to pull, which could be heavy once filled. The doors meet in the middle so they are half the width of the refrigerator instead of the full width. This allows for an easier fit in narrow spaces and smaller kitchens. Let’s face it, most builders are going compact these days in the kitchen area. It’s all about packing into the smallest space possible. This builder thought process influenced the SXS design. The doors on both sides will easily close with just a nudge, you don’t have to second guess if you closed the refrigerator or not when you pushed it with your elbow, they are separately sealed. French Door Then there is the French Door, which is the refrigerator of choice for those who cook a lot or are planning a grand type kitchen environment. The French Door makes it easy for you to place all of you commonly used items at a comfortable height while still having extra width and height adjustable shelving for things like a whole turkey or large pizza. Making this a great refrigerator option for those that host often or cook for the family during the holidays and are always in and out of the refrigerator. Plus your crisper drawer sits around waist height so you’re not constantly bending over. You have the entire width of the refrigerator to work with again but still have the half door design. They will fit into a narrower space and still allow for easy access and shorter doors. to move around. All your food items are at and easily visible height and not more than an arm’s length away at all times, keeping your food from getting lost in the back and only found when an odor is calling your name. There are a couple of things to remember when shopping for a new refrigerator no matter what type you are looking at or decide on. You want to have easily adjustable shelves as everyone uses different products coming in many shapes and sizes. No one refrigerator setting fits every household, so you want to be able to easily adjust your shelves for your desired space setup. Keeping with the ease of use theme, ask about drawer glides. Once you start filling your crisper drawers and deli drawer full, naturally the weight pushes down. Having a drawer glide system allows for easy opening and closing which in turn keeps your shelves from breaking. A broken shelf means money spent and we are all trying to save money these days which means you want a refrigerator that is energy efficient with food preservation technology. All refrigerators have to meet a certain level of energy efficiency these days, but it would hurt to ask if the model you like is energy star certified. Often times this will give you a discount with your power company. Lastly, remember to ask if the brand name you pick is currently offering any mail-in rebates. It won’t always add up to a lot but you can normally cover your install prices! Happy Shopping!!
The Great Debate: Which Refrigerator is right for you?
*Life Hack Alert* Cleaning your Stainless Steel Appliances
Smudged Stainless Fridge       ref stainless
We all love our stainless steel appliances, they add that perfect final touch to any kitchen setup, but anyone who has them knows there’s a sneaky little side effect that accompanies them. SMUDGES! Be it rubs, spills, or simply finger prints, even the tiniest little touch can leave behind a streaking smudge. Try as we might, at times it can seem impossible, and expensive to keep our stainless appliances looking fresh and streak free clean like the day we got them. Forget trying all those store bought cleaners, they can be expensive and often times leave behind a residue themselves.
There are only a few things that you need to have to keep your stainless steel appliances clean and streak free and most of them you may have already at the house: a small spray bottle, micros fiber cloths, vinegar, rubbing alcohol, dish soap and water!
spray bottle     micro fiber cloths     vinegar
alcohol     dish soapwater
When it comes to removing streaks and smudges, we like to start of easy and increase from there….Start with your refrigerator since it’s the largest. Simply fill your spray bottle with water and spray down your entire appliance. Starting at the top and working down simply wipe down the appliance with your microfiber cloth and work in a side to side motion. Remember to go with the grain of you stainless so you don’t accidentally scratch the appliances. Once you reach the bottom use another microfiber cloth or the other side of your current cloth and repeat the same pattern. When you step back you’ll be surprised how nice your stainless looks!
Now, if you find that you need a little more cleaning power then we recommend one of nature’s number one natural cleaning helpers, vinegar. Vinegar can be used in a number of fashions when it comes to cleaning the house, many of which we’ll discuss in later blogs, but for now, lets clean some appliances! In your spray bottle mix 1 part water and 1 part vinegar, then simply repeat the method I mentioned earlier. Now, these tips are for cleaning off those pesky smudges and streaks, if you already know you have food caked onto your refrigerator, then we need to add a step at the beginning. Mix two to three squirts of dish soap into your spray bottle of water and spray the entire appliance from top to bottom. Wipe down the appliance in the same fashion we’ve been discussing, remembering to turn over or use a fresh cloth after the first pass, and then remove the streaks with plain water or your water/vinegar mixture.
The final step to a sparkling bright kitchen is to make those stainless appliances shine! To make your kitchen shine mix 1 part water and 1 part rubbing alcohol, spray down the appliance and repeat the wiping side to side motion. Then step back and observe your money saving efforts, your appliances should be clean and shine like new without breaking the bank! Happy Cleaning!
Preventing a smelly situation….
Do you have a front load washer? Do you find that your clothes are coming out smelling slightly mildewed?
Is there a moldy situation in your washer? We can help....
Most people don’t realize, or even think about the fact that a front load washer is actually very different than a top load. The main difference is the seal. If you think about it, a top load washer lid simply closes, or lies down over the machine. The weight of the lid itself keeps it down and in place, but with a front loader there a lot more involved. There is a rubber seal that goes around the inside edge and the door itself locks in place. These features are critical to keep water from leaking out the front of the machine, but in doing so; they create an air tight seal inside. This air tight seal is a perfect environment for mold and mildew to thrive.
Here are a couple of things you can do to help….
Keeping your door open prevents mold from building upNumber 1: Keep your washer door open at all times except when it’s in use! It doesn’t have to stay wide open, only cracked. This will not only allow air into the machine so that it can properly dry out, it will also help keep moisture from sitting on the rubber seal. Rubber is a prime location for mold and mildew to develop causing a foul odor.
HE-symbolNumber 2: Pay close attention to the type of cleaning and softening products you are using! All front load washers are recommended to be run using ONLY HE detergent. HE detergent can be found at any of your current laundry supply locations. The solution is compounded differently and therefore the dissolving agents are very different. Again, everything is about keeping that rubber seal is good condition and not putting harsh chemicals on it that may cause it to break down. It is recommended to use VERY little fabric softener and detergent in front load washers…If you over use fabric softener it can affect the composition of the rubber seal as well. Never use more than 1 tablespoon per load.
Affresh can be found at any local laundry supply stores...Number 3: If you find that you already have a slight smell developing, never fear! Simply buy a cleaning agent to run through an empty cycle. The most common one out there and the one we recommend is ‘Affresh’. It can be found at most any of your current laundry supply locations. Simply follow the directions on the box, though sometimes if a smell has set in already you may have to run two applications….
It is not recommended to start a cycle of clothes in the morning and leave the house, even sitting all day can cause mildew to begin and once started it will continue….Following these simple guidelines stated above is guaranteed to help keep your front load washer and clothes smelly fresh and clean!!
A clean and happy front load washer!
Keeping a happy Dryer
If you want to ensure a long and functional life for your dryer, routine maintenance is important! Every time you use your dryer it is important to clean out the lint filter. If you run several loads in one day make sure you are cleaning it every time, not just every couple of cycles. From time to time and after heavy use, lint may get behind the screen; it can build up around the edges and just beneath where the screen sits. Over time, lint accumulates in the venting system which will restrict airflow and consequently will cause the dryer work harder and eventually malfunction. Therefore, it is important to clean out any lint that you can easily touch beneath and around the inner area as well when cleaning off your lint screen, this also helps prevent potential fires.
Along with doing this daily preventative maintenance, you should have your entire venting system clean professionally once a year. If you think you are feeling up to the task of giving your dryer its once a year “deep cleaning,” feel free to give it a try. Start out by making sure you have unplugged your dryers power source and turn off the gas supply if its gas. Once you’ve pulled the machine forward from the wall disconnect the duct from the back of the dryer.
Use your vacuum’s attachments to vacuum the back, underneath and surrounding wall areas. Then, vacuum the exhaust ducts. If you have flexible aluminum tubing, you may need to replace the entire length. Rigid tubing should be disassembled and each section cleaned.
Once this is done you can reconnect the vent to the dryer, plug it in and you’re ready to go.
If you ever find that your dryer is taking longer to dry, it’s often times as simple as having the dryers venting cleaned properly either by yourself or professionally. If the problem persists after a thorough cleaning, it may be necessary to have it inspected.
